Self-driving cars, smart assistants, medical diagnostic tools, and even predictive policing are all a part of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem of today. It is safe to say that AI technologies are here to stay and are becoming core parts of our day to day activities. Yet, despite their massive growth, we are still left wondering if AI technologies can be trusted, especially with important ethical matters?

Trust enables adoption. For a group to accept decisions made by AI technology, there must be confidence that the technology implemented is just, precise, and responsible.

Lack of trust can lead to societal rejection of AI for medical, climate, or resource management advancements. This is equally a problem of the opposite effect—uncontrolled trust can result in tendentious AI technologies that end up harming society, like racially biased algorithms in job recruitment, or life-threatening mistakes in self-driving cars.

  • UNESCO AI Ethics Framework: Calls for the advocacy of human rights, transparency, and accountability in AI systems.

  • US AI Bill of Rights (proposed): Prioritizes data collection, privacy, and bias.

Regulation defines responsible use of AI technology, so it serves society rather than exploit it.

Building Public Trust in AI

To answer whether we can trust AI, we look at factors that help in building trust:

Design systems that are capable of articulating the rationale behind their decisions. Public trust relies on the ability for AI to be explainable.

2. Bias Mitigation Strategy

The use of diverse and adequately represented data sets increases fairness across different groups.

3. Governance of AI Ethics

  • Medium-term (2030): AI will be self-governing in transportation, healthcare, and logistics, albeit under strict accountability policies.

  • Long-term (2040+): New laws surrounding responsibility, agency, and rights will need to be defined as the boundary between human and AI decision-making blurs.

Conclusion: Trust, But Verify

So, can we trust AI? The answer is: partially, and cautiously. AI improves efficiency, consistency, and speed in making decisions, but it is not infallible. Neither should it operate without ethical constraints.

Trust in autonomous AI is not granted blindly. It stems from responsible design, transparency, regulation, and ongoing human involvement.

AI can’t be categorized as trustworthy or untrustworthy. It is neutral, a tool. The prospective outcomes—aided or thwarted—are determined by the ethical principles and governance frameworks that we program into the AI systems.

Shifting the focus of autonomous decision-making from human replacement to the preservation of human values within the systems is crucial for AI’s integration in our future. This is how we can trust AI when it is time to shape our world.
